Reader question ยท read twice

Someone rang about my phone โ€” is this a scam?

Phone fraud works by sounding official and rushing you. Armour works by slowing down. Four refusals cover almost everything.

4 absolute refusals ยท report texts to 7726 (free) ยท money gone? bank first ยท then Action Fraud

What do I never, ever give a caller?

  1. One-time passcodes

No legitimate organisation asks for one. The request is the scam.

  2. Banking logins or details

Under no story, however urgent it sounds.

  3. Card numbers or PINs

Including from anyone claiming to be Clickharborr โ€” we never ask.

  4. Account passwords

Hang up. Redial the official number printed on your bill โ€” never the number that just called, never from call history.

What scams are going around right now?

  • The upgrade call. A "loyalty team" offers a lovely deal, then needs a code "to verify you" โ€” the code hands over your account. Real offers show in your official app; five seconds settles it (the trick).
  • The forged number. Your screen shows the network's real number; a criminal is speaking. Caller ID proves nothing โ€” hang up, redial fresh from the bill.
  • SIM-swap. Your number moved to a criminal's SIM; bank codes follow it. Suddenly dead phone while everyone nearby has signal โ†’ the network's official fraud line, immediately. Defences: the eSIM Q&A.
  • The parcel text. "Missed delivery โ€” small fee" leads to a card-harvesting page. Track parcels only in the retailer's own app; type addresses by hand.
  • The merger call. "Your plan must migrate under VodafoneThree" โ€” false. Real changes arrive in writing from the network.
  • The satellite fee. Paid "activation" of satellite messaging โ€” a service that doesn't exist; the trials are network-run and free.

It happened โ€” what now?

  1. Forward to 7726

Scam texts as received; scam calls by texting "Call" plus the number. Free on every network.

  2. Money moved? Bank first

The first hours carry the best recovery odds.

  3. Then Action Fraud

The national reporting centre โ€” every report sharpens the picture.

Want a human, not a webpage?

Ring or WhatsApp and ask your question out loud โ€” coverage, switching, a deal you're not sure about, a bill that stalled, a call that smelt fishy. We'll talk it through in plain English.

Calls: standard landline rate (020), usually inside your inclusive minutes. WhatsApp: free on your data. We give general guidance only โ€” we can't open or touch any network account, and we NEVER ask for passwords, one-time codes, banking or card details.
