Reader question ยท the fixer

Why is my signal so bad โ€” and what fixes it?

Most 'terrible signal' is one room, one wall or one switched-off setting. Work down the list; total cost: nothing.

6 fixes in order ยท cost: nothing ยท first move: Wi-Fi Calling
?

Give me the fixes, best first.

Short answer: Six free moves. Stop when one works.
  1. Wi-Fi Calling on

iPhone: Settings โ†’ Mobile Data โ†’ Wi-Fi Calling. Android: Settings โ†’ Connections or Network (names vary). Calls then ride your broadband under your normal number โ€” the permanent cure for dead rooms. No toggle? Your provider may need to enable it, or may not support it on your brand โ€” check officially.

  2. 4G Calling (VoLTE) on

With 3G gone across the networks, calls need the 4G layer โ€” and some phones shipped with it off.

  3. The ten-second reset

Airplane mode on, count ten, off. Forces the phone to find the strongest local mast; cures a surprising share of "stuck on one bar".

  4. Updates, all of them

Carrier-settings updates carry real network fixes, not just emoji.

  5. Move one metre

Window beats inner wall; upstairs beats basement. Insulation and glazing are the culprits, not the network's grudge.

  6. Status checker before anger

Postcode into the network's status page โ€” planned mast work explains most sudden outages in seconds.

?

And if it's genuinely broken?

When it's a real faultWeeks of failure where coverage was promised: gather dated evidence (checker screenshots, failed-call logs), complain in writing, and if it stalls, the free ombudsman โ€” your rights. Asking in writing for penalty-free release is fair when a service truly fails.

Want a human, not a webpage?

Ring or WhatsApp and ask your question out loud โ€” coverage, switching, a deal you're not sure about, a bill that stalled, a call that smelt fishy. We'll talk it through in plain English.

Calls: standard landline rate (020), usually inside your inclusive minutes. WhatsApp: free on your data. We give general guidance only โ€” we can't open or touch any network account, and we NEVER ask for passwords, one-time codes, banking or card details.
