Is O2 any good?

The landlord of Britain's budget brands, keeper of free EU roaming, owner of the rush-hour confession. Every question we get, answered.

We can't see or touch any O2 account, and we'll never ask for a password, code, banking or card detail โ€” anyone doing that in our name is a criminal. ?

So what actually is O2?

Short answer: The landlord network โ€” and the last one with free EU roaming.

O2 โ€” half of Virgin Media O2 โ€” quietly carries more of Britain than its logo suggests: Tesco Mobile, giffgaff and Sky Mobile all run on its masts. Two things genuinely set it apart. Its phone contracts are split โ€” the handset sits on its own agreement that simply stops when it's paid off. And it's the only big-four network that kept free EU roaming on standard plans.

Its famous weakness is popularity's shadow: data that crawls in packed city centres at evening rush. At the other end, its Starlink satellite-messaging trials (2025โ€“26) are chasing the last rural dead zones.

?

What's this 'split contract' everyone mentions?

Short answer: Phone on one agreement, airtime on another. The phone part ends itself.
  • Device on its own credit agreement โ†’ when it's repaid, that line of your bill stops automatically.
  • You can settle the device early any time and keep just the airtime.
  • Rolling, 12โ€“24 month and PAYG plans sit alongside as normal; exit figures always arrive in your PAC reply.
  • Priority is a separate perks app โ€” freebies, presales. Lovely โ€” but never a reason to accept one bar in your kitchen.

Same two habits as everywhere: spend cap on day one, data sized from three measured months.

?

Does O2 do eSIM?

Short answer: Yes โ€” MyO2, website or shop; recent flagships ready.
  • Number moves by the same free PAC text โ€” 65075 โ€” plastic or digital.
  • Traveller's pairing: O2 line for calls + a local data eSIM for long trips beyond Europe often wins the maths even with the EU perk. Should I get eSIM?
  • Reissues via official channels only; paid "transfer services" are a red flag.
  • Your MyO2 login protects the number that protects your bank โ€” unique password, codes to nobody.
?

What about broadband?

Short answer: In this family, broadband = Virgin Media cables, not masts.
  • Whether your street has Virgin's cable/fibre and whether your bedroom has O2 signal are two separate questions โ€” check both.
  • Homes taking Virgin broadband alongside O2 mobile keep being offered extra data or discounts โ€” always price the pair together.
?

Is the free EU roaming real? And why is town so slow?

Short answer: The perk is real (with a ceiling). The crawl is real too.
  • The perk: standard plans kept inclusive EU roaming โ€” alone in the big four โ€” under a fair-use ceiling (historically around the 25GB mark; O2's pages hold today's figure). Past it, per-GB. Beyond Europe: daily add-ons in MyO2.
  • The confession: independent tests often put O2's average speeds behind the quickest rivals, and the 5:30pm city-centre crawl is its best-known complaint. If your day runs through a packed station at rush hour, trial a SIM there before signing.
  • Unlimited: honest on your phone in the UK; hotspot users read the tethering line.
  • Satellite: network-run trials, rural-aimed, free. Paid "satellite activation" = scam.
?

What are MyO2 and Priority for?

Short answer: MyO2 runs the account. Priority hands out treats. One login covers both.

MyO2: allowances, bills, caps, roaming, eSIM, device balance, support chat. Priority: strictly fun โ€” offers and presales, never admin. That shared login is exactly what "free Priority reward" phishing hunts. Five-second rule from which app do I need?: real offers show in your account; a caller's phantom deal doesn't.

How do I join or leave without getting stung?

  1. Audition the masts for pennies

A short giffgaff or Tesco Mobile plan rides O2's exact network โ€” Britain's cheapest honest trial. Coverage check.

  2. Leave with your number

PAC to 65075 โ€” free, 30 days, any device balance disclosed in the reply. How do I switch?

  3. Escalate if stuck

Eight weeks or deadlock opens the free, binding ombudsman. Your rights.

Ring or WhatsApp and ask your question out loud โ€” coverage, switching, a deal you're not sure about, a bill that stalled, a call that smelt fishy. We'll talk it through in plain English.

Calls: standard landline rate (020), usually inside your inclusive minutes. WhatsApp: free on your data. We give general guidance only โ€” we can't open or touch any network account, and we NEVER ask for passwords, one-time codes, banking or card details.
